ANAHEIM, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/15/10 -- DarbeeVision, Inc., a pioneer in digital image enhancement, today announced it has selected Altera's Cyclone Family of FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays) to enable its Darbee Visual Presence Technology. Recognized for its ability to add depth and realism in real time to digital images, Darbee technology inserts depth cues to create images that seem to pop off the screen. It provides an experience of unparalleled visual immersion and incredible image depth and realism.
Altera's FPGAs will make DarbeeVision's technology readily accessible to OEMs and consumer electronics manufacturers, enabling them to quickly deploy the technology in market applications including television sets, video game consoles, mobile devices, digital picture frames, and aftermarket TV accessory boxes.
"Altera's FPGAs provide a fast to market alternative for the next generation of applications currently considering the longer ramp, ASIC implementation," noted Paul Darbee, DarbeeVision's founder and CEO. "We feel that Altera's Cyclone FPGAs offer the perfect fit for our technology roadmap, due to its low cost, high performance, great availability and the superior support available from Altera."
Darbee Visual Presence FPGA IP is capable of processing HD 1080p/60 video in real time on Altera's Cyclone III and IV products. Altera and DarbeeVision are implementing a joint selling approach for the engagement of consumer electronics customers who will benefit from the Darbee Visual Presence enhancement. The companies are promoting a high performance, fast to market solution.
Such a solution would not have been plausible until recently. Computational imaging solutions promise new, revolutionary ways for consumers to enjoy a more immersive viewing experience. With improved digital image fidelity as the end goal, adoption of computational solutions is beginning to take hold as chip and system processing capabilities catch up to the intensive demands of computational image enhancement algorithms. These improved processing capabilities make next generation imaging technology such as DarbeeVision possible and allow the end user to experience an image quality that is far beyond the limitations of fidelity.
DarbeeVision has pioneered a methodology of using computation to create and embed stereo disparity information into monoscopic images, for an image enhancement effect that goes beyond the mere fidelity of an image to the original scene.
"While other 3D technologies make objects pop out of the screen, DarbeeVision is complementary in providing depth to the fine features of the objects," said Arun Iyengar, senior director of the military, industrial, and consumer business unit at Altera. "This technology should have a significant effect on side by side comparisons of large panel displays in stores."
Darbee Visual Presence enabled by the Altera Cyclone Family of FPGAs will be demonstrated at CES 2011. Please visit www.darbeevision.com for more information.
DarbeeVision was founded by entrepreneur Paul Darbee, a seasoned industry veteran who pioneered the first preprogrammed universal remote control. In 1985, Darbee was one of the founders of Universal Electronics (NASDAQ: UEIC) and was awarded the first of numerous patents in universal remote control technology. Today he holds more than 40 patents with several more pending. In 2006, DarbeeVision was awarded a patent for its visual computing process known as Darbee Visual Presence.
DarbeeVision's proven technology is suitable for a wide range of applications. The technology suite includes: Darbee Software, a software application running on the CPU for still image processing; Darbee GPU Software, a software application running on the GPU for real-time digital video processing; Darbee Box, a CE accessory device based upon FPGA architecture for real-time digital video processing; and the Darbee IP Block, a hardware IP block for licensing to be used in embedded applications.
The privately held company is headquartered in Anaheim, Calif. For further information call (714) 931-5941 or visit www.DarbeeVision.com.
