With the $28.1 billion acquisition of Alltel now completed, Verizon Wireless has become the largest wireless carrier in the U.S. according to subscribership. The company boasts a customer network of more than 83.7 customers, nearly 9 million more customers than AT&T’s numbers in September 2008 (74.9 million).
Verizon's revenue grew 12% y-o-y and added 1.5M new subscribers. DSL subscribers dropped 133,000 but FiOS internet subscribers increased 176,000.
Verizon was approved to introduce its FiOS TV service to customers in New York.
Large tech companies including Verizon, Google, Cisco, Telefon AB, and HP are all working together to buy key patents in an effort to keep it out of the hands of other potentially dangerous companies. Smaller competitors can buy these patents and use it against these companies and end up with a costly law suit.
Palm's new Centro smart phone, the successor to the Treo, will use Verizon as its service provider.
JetBlue plans to buy Verizon's Airfone unit to help the airline offer email and messaging during flights. The two companies have yet to announce how JetBlue will be paying.
AT&T wins a deal with the US Department of Homeland Security worth $678.5 million through 2010. AT&T will provide internet protocol, security services, and emergency contact services.
Earnings rose 2.2% and revenue increased 5.5% y-o-y. Verizon also added 1.5M new customers through its joint venutre with mobile company Vodafone Group PLC Verizon's performance was considered strong especially in the face of an economic slowdown.
Verizon has contracted with Time Warner' segment AOL to handle the entirety of its online advertisement portfolio. Ironically Verizon and Time Warner are currently in the midst of false advertisement litigation concerning comments made about Time Warner’s cable service.
