Volkswagen, MoMA PS1, and MoMA Announce the International Exhibition New Information: Art at the Beginning of a New Now, Opening May 2013

HERNDON, VA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/03/12 -- Volkswagen, MoMA PS1, and MoMA announce New Information: Art at the Beginning of a New Now, a major survey of international contemporary art, which will open in spring 2013. The exhibition will bring together a group of approximately 35 artists whose work explores pressing concerns of the world we now live in. New Information addresses the experience of the world today, where -- for the first time in history -- the challenge is not a lack of information, but an overwhelming abundance of images, fictions and facts. Exhibition and subsequent international tour are made possible by an ongoing partnership between Volkswagen, MoMA and MoMA PS1.

This large-scale exhibition will take over the entire building of MoMA PS1 and the performance dome. New Information is organized by Klaus Biesenbach, Director of MoMA PS1 and Chief Curator at Large of MoMA, with the assistance of Christopher Y. Lew, MoMA PS1 Assistant Curator, advised by contemporary curators from MoMA and MoMA PS1: Peter Eleey (Curator, MoMA PS1), Laura Hoptman (Curator, The Museum of Modern Art), and Roxana Marcoci (Curator, The Museum of Modern Art).

The title, New Information, is not meant only as a reference to museum history; this exhibition will indeed explore new information, its form and content, the process of image making and distribution, and how new information is disseminated. New Information brings together artists who are at home with artificial imagery and those who remain invested in the natural or real world. Some artists explore rigorous methodologies while others follow processes that are scientistic, not exactly based in the tenets of science, but steeped in seemingly rational lines of inquiry.

Klaus Biesenbach said, "The world in which we live has changed drastically; we live in an age of hyper-information. Search engines provide us with a forced, seemingly radical transparency, but without a control mechanism or an authority telling us if information is fact or fiction. Are we living in achronic times, where today is a prequel or a sequel of tomorrow? Inspired by having had the privilege to work with artists like Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch recently, I am trying to plan an exhibition that will reflect on art being made that is anticipating its own future perception and distribution."

New Information is an exhibition engaging artistic practices that are dealing with the aesthetic, political, and ecological challenges between the wish to innovate and the wish to preserve.

Our time now seems to be caught between appeals to occupy, or conversely, escape. A wide range of work deals with creating and changing history, probing the lines between documenting and fictionalizing biographies, between authenticity and mere avatar.

New Information will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue and will embark on a global tour following its debut at MoMA PS1, which will also be generously funded by Volkswagen. Negotiations with venues in Berlin, Moscow, Beijing, and Rio de Janeiro are in process. Tour dates and venues in these cities are currently being confirmed, details forthcoming.

The Volkswagen-MoMA/MoMA PS1 Partnership

Volkswagen, MoMA and MoMA PS1 have engaged in an extensive multi-year partnership that supports exhibitions and education at MoMA and MoMA PS1 and fosters the museum's leadership role in contemporary art and culture, helping it achieve its goal of reaching a diverse and global audience.

The major components of the partnership are the support of New Information, an international contemporary art exhibition at MoMA PS1 in 2013, and its subsequent global tour; the expansion of MoMA's online course offerings; a series of installations in MoMA's Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden; and the new MoMA PS1 Performance Dome, which allowed for expanded winter programming -- from light, sound, and music installations by world-renowned and experimental artists to lectures and special performances.

"Volkswagen is concerned with taking responsibility for a sustainable future with a high level of social responsibility and raising the awareness of this through education and information. This is one of the key reasons why we are supporting the international contemporary art exhibition, New Information: Art at the Beginning of a New Now," said Benita von Maltzahn, Head of Culture and Corporate Social Responsibility, Volkswagen Group.

In 2010, MoMA launched a highly successful pilot program for online courses and Volkswagen's sponsorship has allowed for additional online course offerings, and for the development of new education content. As a result of the partnership, MoMA now offers an online course on the evolution of contemporary art from 1945 to today, and an artist-led studio course on experimentation with collage technique that will provide a deeper understanding of materials and processes, and will develop two additional online courses in the coming year. Video resources developed in tandem with the course content will be used in future online projects that will be accessible to a global audience.

The partnership supports exhibitions in MoMA's Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. This space, designed in 1953 by Philip Johnson, is among the city's most beloved outdoor green, recreational space spaces. The first installation, Figure in the Garden, an exhibition of 18 sculptures from the Museum's collection, including works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, and Joan Miró is currently on view. The highlight is a recent acquisition by German artist Katharina Fritsch titled Group of Figures (2006-2008), nine life-size sculptures painted in bold colors that is on view for the first time at the Museum.

In addition to Volkswagen's strong support for education, its partnership with MoMA has made several monumental exhibitions possible, including Francis Alÿs: A Story of Deception, on view last year at MoMA and MoMA PS1 and more recently in April 2012, Kraftwerk - Retrospective 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 at MoMA, an eight-night, live retrospective by the German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk. Each evening, Kraftwerk performed one of the group's eight albums, and also created a special eight-channel video installation specifically for the MoMA PS1 Performance Dome, which remains on view through May 14, 2012.

The partnership will continue in 2013 with the return of the MoMA PS1 Performance Dome and with the forthcoming international survey exhibition New Information.
