Wuhan Iron & Steel is the fifth largest steelmaker in the world. Also known as WISCO, the company is headquartered in Wuhan City, near the southern bank of Yangtze River. Wuhan Iron & Steel produced almost 38 million tonnes (mt) of crude steel in 2011.
Company Overview
HistoryConstruction of Wuhan Iron and Steel commenced in 1955, with the first open hearth steelmaking funace put into production in 1959[1]. With the Qingshan heavy steel rolling mill project completed in 1963, WISCO crude steel production reached one million metric tonnes in 1970.
Through later acquisitions by Wuhan Iron and Steel of Liuzhou Iron & Steel, of Kunmin Steel and of Echeng Iron and Steel, the company enjoyed substantial growth of steel production around the beginning of the decade.
