Revenue from natural gas sales rose 23.6% in 2008, due primarily to an 18.1% increase in sales volume over 2007. In 2008, Zhengzhou Gas added 74,625 customers for a total of 788,133. The largest areas of growth were in the residential and vehicular segments, due to the comparably lower cost of natural gas over oil and other energy sources. Zhengzhou's industrial users, on the other hand, slowed or halted production as a result of the global financial crisis; though the number of industrial customers increased over 12% in 2008, the volume of natural gas they bought increased just 7.35%, indicating lower natural gas consumption per capita.
