AMD has long since cemented their reputation as a second-fiddle rival to Intel. Even their much vaunted acquisition of ATI suffered an impairment charge not long after the purchase. This article does a great job of breaking down AMD and also of succinctly breaking down the disappointment associated with the poor performance of the stock. An interesting area of investigate would be AMD's lack of involvement in the VC space. Whereas Intel has a strong internal VC team, AMD does not. It would be interesting to document their investment track record.
