Great article - one interesting area to dive into relates to their digital investments. While not equivalent to businesses like Alexa, Amazon's minority investments in companies like Shelfari, a social network for book lovers, provides an interesting insight into their future strategic direction. Given their retailing and shipping expertise, their lack of heavy involvement in the social networking space is especially perplexing as one could imagine that they could market their own wares to users.

Apple's primary value from iTunes ($.10 profit per song) is that they sell more iPods ($100+ gross profit per unit). Why is Amazon getting into this low-margin biz? So it can cross sell books and DVDs?
