"Novellus’s entry into CMP has been difficult due to pricing pressure from AMAT", that may be true the biggest reason(s) are: AMAT has a better tool to do the job - it has higher throughput, less expensive to operate, more reliable, better end point, cleans better, doesn't take a team of pHD to maintain, and can recover easlier. So when several companies evaluated the tools side by side the better tool won and that was AMAT.
