[edit] What impact does each dow component have on the dow average?Suggestion by 63.122.89.3 on 2008-09-16 15:41:53 What impact does each dow component have on the dow average? [edit] How do Changes in Stock Prices Impact the Dow Average?Because the Dow is price-weighted, and not market cap weighted, absolute changes in stock price for each component of the index affect the average the same way. Translating a dollar change in one stock to a points change in the index is easy. Just divide the stock price change by the current Dow divisor to get its effect on the index. Take Stock A, trading at $25. It goes up $5 - so we divide this by 9.5 to get .5 points. So a $5 increase in Stock A's price would add .5 points to the value of the Dow index. If all else stayed the same, the index would go to 50.5 points. |
