It would be helpful to see more data regarding "premium and dark chocolate segments." I see wide variances as to what portion of the US choc. market sales this accounts for. Clearly the segment of huge growth; but what does it mean in terms of dollars. Very obscure at this point in time.

It is well and good that the company is proactively expanding into international markets, especially large ones such as China and India. This is quite a challenge for the following reasons. First off, with greater consumer spending in China there have been serious concerns about weight-gain, and a surge in diabetes cases. This is believed to have been brought on by the abundance of new junk food and higher sugar diets that are have been largely absent from the Chinese diet. Secondly, the Indian market is tough because chocolate is not very popular as a sweet there (they do produce it). There is a very rich (and extremely sugary) selection of local Indian sweets which are highly popular. So, Hershey's foray into these markets might not be such a great contributor to their international revenue stream as some hope. How is Cadbury's business in India or China for that matter?

This is a great article. It would be interesting though to track their attempts to jump start growth via acquisitions in the organic foods sector. Yes, chocolate can be organic as well, and Hershey's took a step in that direction by acquiring Dagoba Organic Chocolates, a company known for their organic chocolate, drinks, and bakery products, in October of 2006. While, the product line is mentioned, it is generalized as being a premium product, when in fact it is much more strategic than that.
