Competition has not been a problem for McDonald's and in fact they are taking market share from both Wendy's and
Burger King, as well as the more expensive dining establishments because of their innovative product offerings such as lean chicken and salad items, and more reasonable prices during this consumer slowdown. The comps prove this point. Secondly, mad cow is under control now by the health officials. Any outbreak can be quickly contained given the experience of what happened in Europe several years ago. Furthermore, mad cow disease is generally not a danger to human beings with only a relatively few dying from the disease even at the height of the European wide spread situation. The point on lawsuits is another less valid negative because to fault fast food is to fault every mom and pop pizza parlor and taco stand in the nation, and every ice cream manufacturer and the entire dairy industry. Might as well sue supermarkets which are a virtual paradise of fat, rich foods. Our litigious society scares people, but the reality is that "freewill" is still a viable philosophical proposition, and each person and parent has the responsibility to do what is right and healthy in their own personal and family interests.
