Monsanto has had a bad rep in India due to the Bt cotton controversy, where high seed prices have forced farmers into borrowing from illegal loan sharks. Though the India govt has set price ceilings for cotton seed prices, this is due in part to combat US's heavily subsidized agro farmers. Monsanto and a few other large conglomerates hold the majority of the seed market, this is seen as a negative due to ologipolistic competition but as a positive due to economies of scale for the resource intensive R&D of future seed varieties.
