Disney is among the more iconic companies / brands in the world. For that reason people tend to underestimate their tech and digital chops. This article is a very detailed overview of the company and every facet of their operations--including New Media--but I think it could benefit from some expanded comments on Disney's commitment to new technology. Case in point, Disney recently announced that Kevin Meyer, an EVP of Corporate Development, is going to head their efforts in the digital media space with regard to future acquisitions. Disney wants to focus on sub $20M investments, which might sound like a pittance, but actually signals a tremendous resource commitment. Consisent with the 4th quarter announcement, Disney has recently acquired iParenting, a community and content site for young parents, EdgeCast Networks, an LA based content delivery network (CDN), and Scrapblog, an online...wait for it...scrapblog service. With Meyer and internal VC firm Steamboat Ventures running the helm, Disney will have a strong presence in the digital content revolution.
