As of 31 December 2007, the Australian Securities Exchange had 1,998 listed companies^[1] with a combined market capitalization of $1.3 trillion.^[2] Formed when the Australian Stock Exchange and Sydney Futures Exchange merged in 2006, the Australian Securities Exchange operates two trading, clearing and settlement platforms. The first is for equity and related equity derivative products traded on an integrated platform that runs from 10:00 to 16:00.^[3] The second is for a suite of interest rate, equity index and commodity futures products traded on a 24-hour platform.^[3]

Benchmark Index

The S&P/ASX 200 Index, composed of the 200 largest index-eligible companies on the exchange, is the benchmark stock index of the Australian Securities Exchange.

Constituent Indices

• S&P/ASX 20 Index (XTL-AU): This index consists of the 20 largest and most liquid stocks by market capitalization in Australia. It is the narrowest capitalization-based index in the S&P/ASX index family, covering 46% of Australian equity market capitalization.
• S&P/ASX 50 Index (XFL-AU): This index consists of the 50 largest and most liquid stocks by market capitalization in Australia. It covers 63% of Australian equity market capitalization.
• S&P/ASX 100 Index (XTO-AU): This index consists of the 100 largest and most liquid stocks by market capitalization in Australia. It represents both the large cap and mid cap components of the S&P/ASX index family, covering 74% of Australian equity market capitalization.
• S&P/ASX 200 Index (XJO-AU): This index consists of stocks in the S&P/ASX 100 Index plus an additional 100 mid cap stocks. It is widely considered to be Australia’s benchmark index, covering 80% of Australian equity market capitalization.
• S&P/ASX 300 Index (XKO-AU): This index consists of stocks in the S&P/ASX 200 Index plus an additional 100 small cap stocks. It covers approximately 81% of Australian equity market capitalization.
• S&P/ASX Mid Cap 50 Index (XMD-AU): This index consists of stocks in the S&P/ASX 100 Index, but not those in the S&P/ASX 50. It covers 11% of Australian equity market capitalization.
• S&P/ASX Small Ordinaries (XSO-AU): This index consists of stocks in the S&P/ASX 300 Index, but not those in the S&P/ASX 100. It is used as a benchmark index for small cap Australian equity, covering 7% of Australian equity market capitalization.
• All Ordinaries Index (XAO-AU): This index consists of the 500 largest stocks by market capitalization in Australia. It is considered to be Australia’s total market indicator and is the only index in this section that is not float-adjusted.

Sector Indices

• S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Discretionary Index (XDJ-AU): This index includes companies that tend to be the most sensitive to Australian economic cycles, such as hotels, restaurants, leisure facilities, media producers, consumer retailers and manufacturers of automobiles, household durable goods, textiles and leisure equipment.
• S&P/ASX 200 Consumer Staples Index (XSJ-AU): This index includes companies that tend to be less sensitive to Australian economic cycles, such as food and drug retailers, hypermarkets, consumer super centers and producers and distributors of food, beverages, tobacco, non-durable household goods and personal products.
• S&P/ASX 200 Energy Index (XEJ-AU): This index includes companies engaged in either: a) the construction or provision of oil rigs, drilling equipment and other energy-related services and equipment; or b) the exploration, production, marketing, refining and/or transportation of oil and gas products, coal and other consumable fuels.
• S&P/ASX 200 Financials Index (XFJ-AU): This index includes companies engaged in banking, mortgage finance, consumer finance, specialized finance, investment banking and brokerage, asset management and custody, corporate lending, insurance, financial investment and real estate, including REITs.
• S&P/ASX 200 Financials excluding Property Trusts Index (XXJ-AU): This index includes all companies in the S&P/ASX 200 Financials Index except those that are classified as REITs.
• S&P/ASX 200 Health Care Index (XHJ-AU): This index includes companies engaged in either: a) the production and operation of health care equipment and supplies, health care products, basic health care services and health care facilities and organizations; or b) the research, development, production and marketing of pharmaceuticals and biotechnology products.
• S&P/ASX 200 Industrials Index (XNJ-AU): This index includes companies engaged in either: a) the production and distribution of capital goods, such as aerospace and defense, construction, engineering and building products, electrical equipment and industrial machinery; b) the provision of commercial services and supplies, such as printing, employment, environmental and office services; or c) the provision of transportation services, such as airlines, couriers, marine, road and rail and transportation infrastructure.
• S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology Index (XIJ-AU): This index includes companies engaged in either: a) software development and software-related services, such as systems, applications and database management, IT consulting, data processing and IT outsourcing; b) technology hardware and equipment, such as manufacturers and distributors of communications equipment, computers, computing peripherals and electronic equipment; or c) semiconductors and semiconductor equipment.
• S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index (XMJ-AU): This index includes companies engaged in commodity-related manufacturing, such as producers of chemicals, construction materials, glass, paper, forest products as well as metals, minerals and mining companies.
• S&P/ASX 300 Metals and Mining Index (XMM-AU): This index is a component of the Materials Sector and includes companies engaged in either: a) the production of aluminium, steel, gold, precious metals and minerals; or b) the production of diversified metals and minerals that are not elsewhere classified.
• S&P/ASX All Ordinaries Gold Index (XGD-AU): This index is a component of the Metals and Mining Sector and includes companies engaged in the production of gold and gold-related products.
• S&P/ASX 200 A-REIT Index (XPJ-AU): This index includes all REITs.
• S&P/ASX 200 Telecommunication Index (XTJ-AU): This index includes companies engaged in the provision of communications services through a fixed line, cellular, wireless, high bandwidth and/or fiber optic cable network.
• S&P/ASX 200 Utilities Index (XUJ-AU): This index includes companies engaged in the production and distribution of electric, gas and/or water utilities.
