Bitumen is a heavy, viscous, black form of petroleum that must be refined (expensively) to be usable. Bitumen is what is found in oil sands, though it usually makes up a small percentage of what is actually found in the reserve (in Alberta, bitumen is only 10-12% of the sand, the rest of which is mineral matter and water). This makes oil sands more expensive to produce than other forms of oil reserve.[1]
