As of 31 December 2007, the Bombay Stock Exchange had 4,887 listed companies[1] with a combined market capitalization of $1.8 trillion.[2] It is Asia's fourth largest stock exchange by market capitalization, behind the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Shanghai Stock Exchange and Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

The number of companies listed on BSE registered a phenomenal increase from 992 in to over 3,200 companies by March 1994, with combined market capitalization rising from INR. 5,421 crores (INR. 54.21 Billion) to INR. 3,98,432 crores (INR 39.84 Trillion) by March 31, 1994.
