Over the past few years, Ciena has expanded its product offerings beyond its core optical networking expertise through partnerships and acquisitions, and entered the market for metro networking products. The company's product portfolio includes core/metro optical transport, core/metro optical switches, and multi-service data switches. Its systems address key issues faced by service providers scalability, increased services, capital expenditure minimization, and rising operating costs.

Ciena sells its products to telecommunication service provider, cable/multiservice operators, enterprise, and government customers. In fiscal year 2007, AT&T accounted for 25.3% and Sprint for 12.8% of revenue. Revenue from customers in the United States comprised 71.0% of fiscal year 2007 revenue.

Ciena's portfolio is grouped into four product lines, which include:

Optical Networking Products this includes metro transport and switching products, core transport and switching products, and multiservice optical access products. Metro Transport & Switching products enable service providers to increase the efficiency of their metropolitan communications networks, allowing them to service more customers, more cost effectively. These products include, CN 4200 Flex Select Advanced Services Platform Family, ONLINE Metro Multiservice DWDM Platform, and then CN 3600 Intelligent Optical Multiservice Switch. Core Transport and Switching scale optical bandwidth and increase capacity to cost-effectively support high-bandwidth applications and traffic. These products also enable service providers to transition their networks to provide cost-effective Ethernet's services. These products include the CoreStream Agility Optical Transport System, and the CoreDirector Multiservice Switch. Multiservice Optical Access support storage extension, interconnection of data centers and aggregation of enterprise data services. These products also enable Ciena's customers to maximize network efficiency associated with transporting, storing, retrieving and sharing data. These products include the CN 2000 Storage and LAN Extension Platform, CN 2200 Managed Optical Ethernet Multiplexer, CN 2300 Managed Optical Services Multiplexer, and the CN 2600 Multiservice Edge Aggregator.

Broadband Networking Products Allow telecommunications service providers to transition their legacy voice networks to support next-generation services such as Internet-base (IP) telephony, video services and DSL. These products allow service providers to offer broadband services over existing copper and fiber access lines, facilitating broader services offerings to compete with cable operators. These products include the CNX-5 Broadband DSL System, and the CNX-5Plus Modular Broadband Loop Carrier.

Data Networking Products include Ciena's multiservice edge switching and routing products, which enable telecommunications service providers to transition their communications networks from legacy technologies, such as ATM and Frame Relay, to next-generation technologies, such as Ethernet and IP/MPLS. These products include the DN 7000 Series Multiservice Edge Switching and Aggregation Platform, CN 4350 Ethernet Service Provisioning Switch, CN 3000 Ethernet Access Series, and the 5060 Multiservice Carrier Ethernet Platform.

Network and Service Management Software is offered across all Ciena product lines. Ciena's ON-Center Network & Service Management Suite is designed to increase network automation and simplify network management and operation. Ciena's network and service management products are also designed to facilitate rapid and simplified provisioning of new or modified service connections and the efficient allocation of bandwidth required to deliver such services.
