In the US, closed end funds are one of three SEC recognized types of investment company along with Mutual Funds and unit investment trusts. It is a fund that maintains a fixed number of shares, and rarely issues new shares. The value of the shares in a closed end fund is determined by the company's investments as well as a market premium.
