The Exchanges
Commodities futures contracts are all traded on futures exchanges. Reading about the specifics of the contracts and the mechanisms of trade are an excellent way to learn about the factors driving futures prices.

- In 1998, the NYBOT became the parent company of the New York Cotton Exchange and the Coffee, Sugar and Cocoa Exchange; the NYBOT was later acquired by the ICE. Though the New York Cotton Exchange and Coffee, Sugar, and Cocoa Exchange are no longer technically their own independent entities, the names of the exchanges are still used in describing classes of futures contracts formerly traded on those exchanges.

- The NYMEX classifies commodities into two categories, COMEX for metals, and NYMEX for all others. While the NYMEX is the parent company for both, Comex is used, functionally, as a metals-exclusive exchange.
