Forbearance is a period of time during which the borrower is permitted to temporarily cease making regular monthly payments. Interest continues to accrue during the forbearance period and any accrued interest that remains unpaid at the end of the forbearance period will be added to the principal balance. Forbearance is available to assist borrowers who are unable to make their regularly scheduled payments for such reasons as: experiencing temporary financial difficulties, being affected by a natural disaster, or participating in an internship or residency program. Under the FFEL Program, some types of forbearance are granted based on meeting eligibility requirements; others are granted at the discretion of the lender.
