WIKI ANALYSISGold Fields NYSE:GFI is a gold producing company based in South Africa. It ranks second among South Africa's gold mining companies in terms of production (3.49 million ounces in the 12 months leading up to August 2011;[1] 3.5-3.6 million ounces in production forecast for the following year). Production comes from eight operating mines in Australia, Ghana, Peru and South Africa. It also oversees four other major resource development projects. 2P reserves (as of May 2011) total about 77 million ounces of gold equivalent out of a total resource base of 225.4 million ounces.
April 18, 2011 paid US$379 million to increase its share in Gold Fields La Cima S.A.A. (La Cima) to 98.5% from 80.7%. The 17.8% increase came from 8% more common shares and 95.1% of the company's total investment shares. Annual production by La Cima is 400,000 gold equivalent ounces mostly at its Cerro Corona gold and copper mine in Peru which has 5.3 million ounces of gold reserves.[2]
