Lan Airlines S.A. (LFL), formerly Lan Chile S.A., is the main provider of domestic and international passenger and cargo air services in Chile and one of the leading airlines in Latin America. The Chilean government founded Lan Chile in 1929. The company was government-owned until its incorporation in 1983. In 2005, the company changed its name from Lan Chile to Lan Airlines, a more international brand. Today, Lan Airlines' operations are carried out by a number of different subsidiaries using a variety of brand names, forming the Lan Alliance. The Lan Alliance includes: LanChile, LanExpress, LanPeru, LanEcuador, and LanDominicana. Through this alliance and its code-share arrangements, Lan Airlines serves 15 destinations in Chile, seven destinations in Peru, two destinations in Ecuador, 18 destinations in Latin America, 25 destinations in North America, 10 destinations in Europe, and four destinations in the South Pacific. The company has a fleet of wide-bodied aircraft, narrow-bodied passenger aircraft, and freighter aircraft. The company also provides cargo service to all passenger destinations and to additional freighter destinations. Furthermore, LFL offers handling services and courier services through some of its subsidiaries. Lan Airlines has been increasing its strategic international alliances. During November 2004, Lan Airlines and Korean Air signed a commercial alliance that would increase connections between Latin America and South Korea. In March 2005, both companies signed another agreement to cooperate in the passenger business. Also during 2005, Lan Cargo and Lufthansa Cargo signed an agreement in order to complement routes and create operational synergies at North and South American airports. During the first half of 2005, Lan Airlines, together with a local partner, acquired the Argentine carrier Aero2000. The carrier was renamed to Lan Argentina and initiated its operations on June 8, 2005, with three domestic destinations. The results of its Argentine business have been better than expected.
