Nicor has been in business for five decades. The corporation's largest subsidiary, Nicor Gas, was founded in 1954 as Northern Illinois Gas and today is one of the largest natural gas distribution companies in the country, serving more than two million customers in 641 communities.

Nicor Gas operates a network of more than 32,000 miles of pipelines, connected to the largest underground storage facilities in the country.

Nicor's second largest subsidiary is Tropical Shipping, a containerized shipping business serving the Bahamas and Caribbean regions. Nicor also owns and has equity interest in several unregulated energy-related businesses including:
