Shareholders are the owners of a company. They have the potential to profit if the company does well, but that comes with the potential to lose if the company does poorly. [1] The majority of shareholders tend to be in older age groups, and very few are aged under 35. Shareholders are likely to have a high level of education, [2] and rely on the mass media, and advise from family/friends for investment information. [3] American shareholders consistently rank and rate long-term profit as the ultimate goal for their companies, with short-term profits relegated to last place. [4] What they have in common is there time horizons, their sources of information and that they choose their target companies by gut feel. [5] There is a wide disparity between individual shareholders perceptions of the importance of non-financial issues. [6]
