Shire Pharmaceuticals Group, PLC (SHPGY), an emerging global pharmaceutical company, has strategic focus in several therapeutic areas including Central Nervous System (CNS), gastro intestinal (GI), and renal disorders. It has several products on the market, including Adderall XR for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Pentasa for ulcerative colitis. In addition to product sales, the company earns revenue from royalties on product sales, primarily through collaborative agreements with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). These royalty-generating products consist of 3TC for HIV and Zeffix for Hepatitis B infection. With the acquisition of Transkaryotic Therapies, Inc. (TKT), Shire has increased its portfolio by four products. The TKT deal will allow Shire to expand its activities into the field of rare genetic diseases and will also strengthen the company's specialty sales and marketing force. Shire recently re-organized its business into two areas: Specialty Pharmaceuticals and Human Genetic Therapies (HGT). The HGT business includes the products acquired from TKT.
On April 19, 2007, Shire completed the acquisition of New River Pharmaceuticals (NRPH) for approximately $2.6 billion. Shire had a collaborative agreement with NRPH for the development and co-promotion of Vyvanse (formerly known as NRP104). The acquisition will allow Shire to gain full control over Vyvanse, which was launched recently in the U.S. market. Shire intends to position Vyvanse as its flagship product for ADHD. The acquisition should be dilutive over the next two years and accretive from 2010 onwards. Other products in NRPH's pipeline include NRP290 (for the treatment of acute pain) and NRP409 (which is being developed as a replacement or supplemental therapy in patients with primary hypothyroidism and other indications).
