Tar sands, or oil sands, are exactly what they sound like - sand saturated with oil.

Canadian tar sands production is estimated to increase from 1.32 mb/d to 3.23 mb/d. Tar sands have a tremendous global warming footprint, however, and environmentalists are pushing legislation through Congress to limit the amount of oil sands products that government agencies can purchase.[1]
