Capital appreciation

As investors use the term, capital appreciation is the increase of the value, or market price, of the principal asset of an investment. [1][2][3]^[1]

Capital comes from heafodgilt "deadly sin, capital offense, and " heafdes þolian "to forfeit life." Appreciation from sense of "rise in value" from c.1790. Principalis means "first in importance," or "money on which interest is paid;" [4]
